Comments This work was later used for the choreographed piece by Merce Cunningham entitled Arcade, with stage decors and costume design by Dove Bradshaw. The piano part for this work is actually a composition for percussion. Cage used the star-charts of the Atlas Borealis as his composing means. In the cello part, pitch, duration, articulation, color, and dynamics for each sound are notated precisely. |

Dedicatee(s) Jack and Jeanne Kirstein (originally). "The Etudes Boreales for Piano Solo (in memoriam Jeanne Kirstein) are now dedicated to Michael Pugliese" (from Mode 1/2 liner notes by John Cage) |
